Limitations

The time-scale is likely to be the shortest possible one. If one uses emotional rightness it is difficult to look through something unpleasant in order to see something pleasant beyond it. Thus it may feel right to drop out of school and enjoy one’s youth on the beach. If one used a longer time-scale one might see that future enjoyment depended on the interests and earning capacity that would have been developed at school. This short time-scale is a severe limitation since one of the main purposes of thinking is to free one from domination by immediate reactions in order to think ahead to what will happen later on.

Another limitation of emotional rightness is that the ideas it supports may clash with the interests of others. Since everyone has emotions everyone is entitled to his own emotional rightness in thinking. Thinking based on emotional rightness is only right for those whose emotions run that way. And it is absurd to try and impose this rightness on others.
